Once the food’s ready, we sit at the table, each with a bowl in front of us. I’ve checked the time repeatedly since Elizabeth’s arrival and do it once more before settling in to eat: 4 hours, 2 minutes. I’m negotiating with myself over how long it will take to do the things I need to accomplish for a getaway. Factored into that is the still impossible question of how to find the most likely opening between this side and where vessels await. Oh, and how will I gain welcome access to one once I’m on the platform? Also, a big unknown.

I spoon some of the soup she’s made and release it back into the bowl, stirring and stirring.

“What is it?”

“Hmm?”

“Aren’t you going to eat?”

“I…sorry. My head is someplace else.”

Elizabeth smiles in the understanding way that must be second nature to her—as if she has an endless supply of patience. I take a spoonful, and it’s a warm mixture of flavors that mean comfort and intimacy.

“Good?” she asks.

“Very.”

“Then let’s just eat and let everything else slip away for a while.”

I breathe in more of the soup’s aroma. But the knowledge that time’s passing won’t allow me to settle down.

“I wish I could, but…”

“But what?”

Here it is. There’s no more time to stall.

“Are you thinking about Benjamin?”

“Benjamin?”

“Yes.”

“I’m just…”

“Jack, don’t worry about the codes. Or about CloutSpec. They did what they had to do. By now they’re down at the healing ward—or at least Kivvington is.”

“What? Why?”

“Sam Pfluger. We got word just before shift end—they’re bringing him out of the coma early.”

“Who said that?”

“I don’t know. Dr. Sketts was getting ready to do it manually. They think he might know something about the codes—like they thought about you, I guess.”
